Justice for Gurkhas?

Nick Clegg and Gurkhas with medals

At a protest last March, retired Gurkhas handed over their medals to Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg

The High Court ruling that the Home Office's instructions denying Gurkhas the right to live in the UK are unlawful, is a great moral victory not only for these brave warriors, but also for the long campaign fought on their behalf. This was backed recently by actress Joanna Lumley after being raised in Parliament by Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg MP last March and again in June.

Nick Clegg has welcomed the High Court ruling condemning the Government's policy of deporting retired Gurkhas and called on ministers to now give all retired Gurkhas the right to become British citizens.

So far Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has merely promised to review the outstanding cases by the end of the year. Getting a promise of a review from the government is not the same as securing success for the campaign, so Joanna Lumley and the Gurkha Justice Campaign, backed by Nick Clegg, has launched a fresh online petition.
